Growing up in the middle of nowhere is a mix of things. At times it's easy to feel like your alone in the world and that you'll never achieve anything while at others it's just what a creative person needs to gain self awareness and prepare themselves for a life of necessary isolation in order to create When I was a child I couldn't wait to be somewhere else and do great things and when I grew up, which in itself is debatable, having my fill of big cities I couldn't wait to get back. Now that I'm here I've created more Artwork and dreamed even bigger dreams then I did when I was away. I guess being in the middle of nowhere isn't such a bad thing after all. Dream Big My Friends!

I hope everyone has a Safe and Happy New Year! Think good thoughts, do good deeds and try not to be as quick as you may have been in the past to judge or form opinions about those you fear or know little about. Learn more about everything and then question everything you know, never give up on yourself or your dreams despite what those around you might say or do, think for yourself and promote peace. Change is rarely easy and there is a lot coming so as long as you stay grounded and keep your sense of who you are, surround yourself with people who love and challenge you and remember to laugh 2012 will not turn out to be the end but rather a begining. With that said I'm not sure what it begins but after all I'm a Cartoonist I don't have all the answers. Be safe and keep the faith! Whatever yours may be.

Standing in line at the San Diego Comic-Con is a great way to meet a lot of interesting characters. Once you finally get in the sights and sounds can be a bit overwhelming but once you get used to it you truly never want to leave. That and it takes a good two hours to find an exit anyway. Next year I may even go for real.

The Snow Bird Returns

After what has seemed like a winter that would never end I was out for my morning walk yesterday (March15th) and was happy to see hundreds of Geese heading north. The snow has begun to melt and I've started sneezing. While the rest of the world is in chaos here in my little world spring is a welcome and needed sign of hope.

Civility Reboot or Not!

The only people that are convinced that changing the seating arrangement at the State of the Union speech is a sign of a new era of civility in Washington DC are the people that think the American people are naive enough to believe anything that comes out of any politicians mouth. Primarily the Politicians. By naive I actually mean devious and self serving. The President will give his speech, they all will clap to much, the pundits will over analyze the speech, the facial expressions and body language and the individual Politicians will be interviewed and speak of how good natured they were to one another. The opposing party and it's sub party will give their responses which will contradict whatever the President says and within a day or two( probably sooner) the nonsense will begin all over again. Meanwhile the rest of the country will continue to search for work, struggle to put their kids through schools that are being turned into Walmarts and Prisons, cope with failing infrastructure and businesses being sent overseas and somehow make it through another day because that's what we do. Or I could be wrong....but I doubt it.

Pet Peeve

This one is based on a pet peeve of mine that I'm sure many people share. I admit that there are far more important things in the world to worry about but it's Friday and this has been bugging me for a very long time. I assume most of us have enough imagination that even if we haven't lived through a terrible disaster be it man made or natural that we probably already have some idea of what it would feel like. Of course I'm assuming here, so for a moment let's pretend I have some idea what I'm typing about. That being said why do Reporters continue to ask the obvious? We know that the victims feel terrible that their house was burned to the ground or destroyed by a storm, that their loved one being murdered has left them in a pit of hopelessness and despair or that the abduction of their child or the death of a loved one in a war is so painful words can not express their true feelings. I understand that human interest stories are meant to engage the sympathies of the viewer and in many instances help the victims to work through the shock which is part of the healing process. They're not bad for ratings either. Case in point the endless coverage of the horrible shootings that took place at a Safeway in Tucson. I suppose the lack of creativity and almost mechanical aspect of the Reporters delivery is what bothers me the most. I'd love to see it handled in a way that doesn't cheapen the magnitude of the event without using tired old cliches and hack questions. Ask them anything just stop asking them how they feel. We already know. Then again I tend to over think everything. That's how I feel if anyone is interested.

This is a real old one. I believe I did it back in 82 or 83. Pen and ink and colored pencil on illustration board. I love the stippled moon. I'm in the process of putting a power point together that shows examples of my work dating back to 1978 so I'll post some of what I have here. I like to look at my past work to reassure myself that I have actually gotten better. Especially when I have creative dry spells.

This is an example of the type of ship I traveled to Earth on after my home world was destroyed by a race of creatures known as the Re-publakens. A race notorious for their inability to get along with anyone who doesn't look or think like they do. Unfortunately I think they may have found me and are in the process of destroying this world.

I original set out to create a Tea Party cartoon and then decided that I really wasn't in the mood to keep picking on people. Despite the fact that the movement bothers me I felt like I was starting to fall into a downward spiral of pettiness so once I started working on this I thought I'd see if I could come up with a picture that might fit a childrens book. Although the color of the table cloth bugs me a bit I thought I'd post it and see what kind of feed back I could get.

I lived in the South Western United States for about twenty years and grew to love everything about it. When you grow up in the North East and are surrounded by trees and lakes and have to live through four unique seasons you find it hard to believe that a desert could be any thing other than a dry barren waste land. Nature has a funny way of surprising you. The shear beauty and open space is enough to inspire even the least creative among us to take up a brush and start painting or to write music and poetry. This is a painting inspired by a dream of a place I think I drove through years ago. It seems so long ago I may have imagined the place but then again what is reality?

South Bound

Fall is the one season that I have the most mixed feelings about. I love it because I live in a small town where it's hard not to feel like you live in a cliche. There are festivals of all sorts, sports start up again, colorful leaves are every where, school starts, geese start flying south, the temperature starts to get cooler and the amount of daylight decreases. The smells alone make it worth living through. Of course it means winter is not that far off and not being a big fan of snow I quietly hope, as not to upset my friends who are avid skiers that the snow if it comes doesn't do so until Christmas. And then only long enough for my girls to have a white Christmas. This is one of my recent paintings depicting a Goose who has decided to take enough with him this year so that when the time comes he will stay in Florida while all the other Snow Birds head back north.

To be honest I've always had mixed feelings about the military and that includes during my time in the Marines. Part of me realizes that the world is a hostile and chaotic place where sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to to have a bigger stick while the other part likes to to think that we as a species should be able to resolve our issues without violence. With that said I don't think that there will be anytime in the near future where nations or extremist groups (from both ends of the spectrum) will sit down and resolve their conflicts over a beer. Despite my idealism I'm still a pragmatic individual and although I might like to see a world where no one is blowing each other up over who's God is the better one or who's patch of earth is holier I believe a strong military is important to the well being of our nation. Hopefully in the future the members of our military won't be forced into no win situations based upon trumped up threats or revenge fantasies. Although the war in Iraq will not truly be over until every last American has left the country for home or to complete the war in Afghanistan it's nice to see all the families reunited with their loved ones who in their own ways have completed the most important mission any member of our military can, coming home alive.

I'm a pretty liberal guy and for the most part I understand a persons need for self expression even if they all end up looking like each other. I freely admit going through a Miami Vice phase and for a brief moment did have a small mullet. I've even grown to accept the idea of grown men wearing ball caps back wards. With that said the one thing I will never wrap my brain around is the concept of wearing ones pants low enough to see their boxers (at least they wear those). Fashion and self expression are fine but when it comes to the practical issue of mobility wouldn't you want to be able to get from point A to point B without your pants falling down? Then again maybe I'm just showing my age. Although I'd trade my white suit, blue t-shirt and boat shoes for pants on the ground any day.

Not since Senator Joe McCarthy In a 1950 speech, entered the public spotlight by claiming that communists had "infested" the State Department, while he dramatically waved a sheet of paper which purportedly contained the traitors' names has there been a stage prop used so successfully to agitate and insight people. Glenn Beck is a master at what he does and I admit that at times I find some of what he says to be funny and even thought provoking, but unfortunately far to many people take every word he says as the unquestionable truth. There is a fine line between what you say and knowing when not to say it and although I am a believer in everyones right to freedom of speech I also believe that when you chose to spend your life expressing your opinions you should be aware of the consequences that may result from the content of your statements. A misspoken word or turn of phrase can have terrible results. We try to teach our children to think before they speak but for some reason the concept is lost in adult hood. Sometimes knowing what not to say is far more important than saying everything that comes to mind or in the case of Glenn Beck is drawn on a Chalkboard.

I lived there for twenty years and like a lot of places and things in life after awhile it was easy to take it for granted. It really is an awe inspiring place. Now if all the people would move back to where they came from then maybe I'd leave the northeast and spend the last fifty years of my life out there. Give or take a decade.

I was going to write about how I spent my childhood imagining that some day I would be a super hero Cartoonist but then it dawned on me that I never really got over the idea that it would be fun to have a character to channel my inner or outer child through. Although I didn't grow up to be the next George Perez or John Byrne, which is probably good for both of them because they're both still alive and doing great work I have settled on a style that I'm relatively happy with most of the time. Rebound is probably the closest thing I'll ever come to creating a superhero, but then again life has very few absolutes in it so any thing is possible.

It doesn't cure disease, the housing, economic and job problem nor does it feed the starving, end war or suddenly cause politicians to live up to all their promises. It does however give people one more electronic device that will be left in airports, hotels,cabs and elevators. It's use will further isolate one human from another and once the next big thing is announced it will become obsolete and be thrown onto a garbage heap like every new thing that has come before. some where. I think I'll buy two!

The State of Disunion

In a nation where image has become far more important to most than substance the idea of giving Obama a complete make over doesn't seem all that far from reality. Of course who's reality is the question? When I was in the Marines one of the t-shirts that I often saw being worn by my fellow Marines had a saying on it that seems to sum up the attitudes of a lot of people in this country. "Kill them all and let God sort them out!" Straight to the point and devoid of all the true complexities that come from living in a complicated world. In all honesty If I could live in such a world where problems were as easy to solve as the the phrase implies I might just do it. Unfortunately problems are not resolved by simply saying they are. The past year has been a rough one for most of us and although a lot of us are still unemployed but looking, working at jobs that pay far less than we are worth or are in school trying to learn new skills the underlying truth is we just don't believe in own own government any more. Those that voted for Obama are frustrated that he hasn't been able to meet all their expectations immediately and they are angry at the Republicans for appearing to have no other agenda than to see him fail. While those who were convinced that he had no chance of accomplishing anything in the first place continue their mission to create a bogus grass roots organization that makes them rich, preys on peoples fears, and spreads lies and cancerous rumors that prevent truly constructive dialog from ever happening. It's not all that surprising that in a country where people will celebrate the success or loss of a sporting event by rioting and that Sarah Palin is popular because she comes from a disfunctional family like the majority of us, is photogenic unlike the majority of us, panders to an image of America where slogans solve problems and talks in a folksy way without saying anything that we become impatient with a president when he hasn't fix what was broken when he got the job. To make matters worse when he attempts to do anything the first response people have is to say is that it won't work. I voted for Obama for a lot of reasons and I did it knowing that he was not the overall solution to problems we face. In the long run if we are not willing to figure out some way to work together it really doesn't matter who the President is. Slogans and speeches are great but we all know that actions speak louder than words.

If Obamas first year in office has proven one thing about the United States it's that despite the best of intentions no matter how hard some one tries to change the status quo there will always be a percentage of the population who are convinced that the President is out to destroy everything they hold sacred.

We live in a nation that at times can seem petty and so self absorbed that we can begin to become isolated from one another and lost in our various day to day concerns about what to wear to work, which piece of new technology to buy, what we would say to a particular talk radio host if we ever cornered him in a dark alley, what to do with unruly kids, which political party is more evil than the other or who is the most attractive political candidate. To each of us the daily life that we live has a certain amount of order to it and if by chance some thing should occur that disrupts our routines just a little a vast majority of us would be at a loss as to what to do to regain control. Now imagine if you live in Haiti and have lived in poverty all your life, suffered through, war, disease and one natural disaster after another and then stop to think what you would do if every thing and every one you knew was destroyed. Life is precious and although we will never agree on almost anything most of us should agree that we need to help those who can not help themselves. If you pray please do so for the injured and the dead and if you don't please do what ever you can to help. I'm not a rich man but I'm willing to do what I can. Skip your morning routine and find a better use for the money you would normally spend on your latte or bagel. We are a nation that loves to express ourselves by yelling at one another. How about just this once we do what we always tell our kids and prove that actions do indeed speak louder than words.

Once again a new year is upon us and if last year was a sign of things to come the best thing I can advise for 2010 is to hold on tight it's only going to get worse. As long as we maintain a sense of humor and a little perspective we might be able to make it to 2011 with our sanity intact. Maybe!

A Walk in the Woods

Every artist has a creative process that involves various rituals. One of my favorites is going for long walks in the woods. I can honestly say some of my best and worst ideas have come to me while I struggled to reach the top of a hill. Most of the time they are good ideas but every once in a while it's an idea that may have sounded good as I was walking but once I put it on paper it really stinks.

I always loved super hero comics when I was a kid and at one time thought I might work in the comic book industry but as with most things in life my path went in a couple other directions. With that said I've decided to see what my own character would look like if he were to become some of my favorite and not so favorite characters. Thor was never one of my favorite characters but I did love the costume. Now that I think about it where did Thor get his cloths anyway?

The one thing I remember most about the first day of the new school year was the fact that my over active imagination always made me worry more about what was in store for me than what eventually happened. Now that I'm a parent I don't worry as much as I did but I still have a little anxiety over how my daughter will deal with the day to day world of being in school in the twenty first century.
